Nail Fungus

If fingernail or toenail fungus is left untreated, it may spread throughout the entire nail and destroy the nail plate. There is also a risk that the nail fungus might spread to previously healthy nails or the skin, for example through socks or shoes to which the fungal pathogens stick.

Factors that increase the risk of nail fungus:

  • Damage to the nails or surrounding cuticle

  • Walking barefoot at the swimming pool, in public changing rooms or showers

  • Poor foot hygiene

  • Diabetes

  • Sports
